Carbon
monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless and tasteless toxic
gas. It is a by-product of the incomplete combustion of
fossil fuels such as gas, kerosene, oil, wood and coal.
Common sources of carbon monoxide in the home include
heating systems, ranges and ovens, clothes dryers, water
heaters, fireplaces and wood stoves. Indirect sources
include powered tools, charcoal grilles and motor vehicles.

Considerations
To minimize CO concerns, the HouseMaster Technical Staff
recommends homeowners install (and test regularly) carbon
monoxide detectors throughout their homes. Should any CO
concerns surface, all fuel-burning and venting provisions
should be checked. The potential infiltration of CO gases
from attached garages should also be considered as a source
of CO.
