Radon is an
odorless radioactive gas which is formed by the natural
breakdown of uranium. Radon can be found in high
concentrations in soils and rock formations containing
granite, shale, phosphate and uranium in almost any area. As
it is produced, it seeps up into houses through cracks and
gaps in a foundation or slab. It can also be
introduced into the air through the water supply,
particularly from well systems.

Considerations
Research has shown that once trapped inside a closed
structure, radon can accumulate to the point where a
potential health hazard may exist. The HouseMaster Technical
Staff recommends that houses in recognized radon areas be
screened for the presence of radon at elevated levels. High
radon levels can usually be addressed for a reasonable fee
in the thousand-dollar range, by installing a radon
mitigation system. Newer homes in high radon areas may have
radon mitigation components pre-installed for subsequent use
should future problems arise.
