Named
after an Indian word meaning "where the fresh water falls into
the salt," the village of Mamaroneck grew up around its harbor
which is the second largest natural small boat harbor on the East
Coast. this picturesque town retains the charm and flavor of a
quaint New England Village, yet is located within 32 minutes of
midtown Manhattan. Located in southern Westchester, the
town of Mamaroneck borders the shores of Long Island Sound and
consists of several picturesque seaside communities. It is composed
of the Village of Larchmont, the Village of Mamaroneck and the
unincorporated area. Most of Mamaroneck Village is within the Town
of Mamaroneck; the Rye Neck area is in the town of Rye. the area
boasts 12 1/2 miles of shoreline, scenic harbors, sandy beaches and
more than 323 acres of parkland culture. Mamaroneck offers a
spectrum of cultural opportunities and are rich in theatrical
history. Renowned actors such as the Barrymore family, Mary Pickford
and Douglas Fairbanks lived in these shore communities. Today, the
Emelin theatre for the Performing Arts in Mamaroneck presents over
200 quality performances annually featuring professional
entertainment from children's programs to jazz, ballet and a
repertory company. Both communities are proud of their public
libraries, which sponsor year 'round art exhibits. The superb
waterfront offers abundant yachting facilities for large and small
craft alike. there is also swimming, tennis, and golf at numerous
locations. Year-round programs include ice skating, softball,
gymnastics and hiking on nature study trails. Mamaroneck offers
a variety of fashionable boutiques, gift shops and antique shops.
the downtown locations have a number of banks, pharmacies,
supermarkets, beauty salons, and specialty shops with luxury items
from around the world. Branches of major department stores are in
nearby towns. the village enjoys a fine representation of
International and American cuisine.
